Scientific evidence suggests that some of these chemicals may be harmful to people, especially infants and children.
The two best-studied offenders are bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates. BPA mimics estrogen and has been shown to disrupt hormone and reproductive system function in animals. Research by the National Toxicology Program found a moderate level of concern about its "effects on the brain, behavior and prostate gland in fetuses, infants and children." Phthalates have been shown to disrupt the endocrine system and have led to malformations in the male reproductive system in animals. Studies in humans have found associations between high phthalate exposure and a variety of health concerns including low sperm quality, high waist circumference and insulin resistance.
Researchers are still debating whether phthalates and BPA actually cause these health problems and, if so, how much exposure is necessary to trigger them. While these issues are being figured out, some experts recommend taking a preventive approach: "Minimize contact of food with problematic plastics as a precautionary measure to protect your health," suggests Rolf Halden, PhD, adjunct associate professor of environmental health sciences at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Here are six simple tips for reducing your exposure to the potentially harmful chemicals in plastics.
        Reconsider the microwave. Heat can increase the rate at which chemicals like BPA leach from plastic. Containers labeled "microwave safe" have been tested by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and found to leach extremely small amounts, which the FDA has determined to be safe. However, some experts advise people to keep plastic out of the microwave altogether. "I don't microwave anything in plastic," says Lunder. "It's really easy and fast to put my food into a ceramic or glass container and heat it that way." And never put plastic wrap on top of your food in the microwave, since it can melt. Use wax paper or a paper towel instead.
        Don't panic. Cutting down on exposure to potentially harmful chemicals in plastics can benefit your health. But as Dr. Halden reminds us, "Many things in your life pose a much higher risk than exposure to plastics, such as smoking, poordiet and even driving a car."

        Use it for its intended purpose. Plastics that are designed for single use should only be used once. "Plastic breaks down over time," Lunder explains. "Some aren't designed to withstand heating and cooling." Most plastics with recycling code number 1 are intended for single use, such as disposable water bottles. And that takeout container from six months ago? Toss it. In general they're fine for refrigerating leftovers, but aren't designed for heat exposure or long-term use.
        Wash by hand. Only put plastics into the dishwasher if they have a dishwasher safe label. If you want to be extra-cautious, wash all plastics by hand or use only glass and ceramic plates and dishes. In the dishwasher, plastics are exposed to detergents and heat, which may accelerate the leaching of BPA from food containers.
        Know the code. Look on the bottom of your plastic to find the recycling symbol (a number between 1 and 7 enclosed in a triangle of arrows). The code indicates the type of plastic you are using and can give you important clues about safety. "We generally say 1, 2, 4 and 5 are considered to be the safest," says Sonya Lunder, senior analyst at the Environmental Working Group. Try to avoid using plastics with 3 or 6, as these leach chemicals that may be harmful. Number 7 is an "other" category that includes BPA-containing plastics called polycarbonates. These plastics, which you should avoid, will have the letters PC printed underneath the 7.

        Do not freeze. Only put plastics in the freezer if they have a freezer-safe label. Freezer temperatures can cause plastics to deteriorate, which increases the leaching of chemicals into the food when you take containers out of the freezer to thaw or reheat.

"Unfortunately your Republican governor," Palin said. She paused and added, "I don't know if he wants to be one or is a Republican anymore" -- which prompted a chorus of boos.
"Your governor, he decided to veto this pro-life bill," she said, according to AP, and then pointed out how Crist is hypocritical to call himself pro-life at the same time he vetoed a bill that would help reduce abortions and inform women. "He forgot that, when to comes to protecting the sanctity of life, actions speak louder than words."
The ultrasound bill has been a topic in the Florida Senate race, with Rubio criticizing Crist for vetoing the measure that has cut abortions in other states and given women information abortion centers don't normally provide.
During the speech for Heroic Media, a pro-life group that relies on billboards, television ads and the Internet, Palin touched on the typical personal topics she does in many of her stump speeches, such as the birth of her mentally disabled son Trig.
"God will never give you anything you can't handle," she said about what she told people before his birth, before adding that, during the pregnancy, she thought, "God, I think you've overestimated us this time."
"How in the world is this going to work? Does God really know what He's doing?" she said she asked herself. Now, she knows "God does know what He's doing."

A year from today, Stephen will be joining him.”
“The player was developed and cared for in the correct way, and things like this happen,” Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo said in the conference call. “Pitchers break down, pitchers get hurt and we certainly are not second-guessing ourselves. Frustrated? Yes. But second-guessing ourselves? No.”
Strasburg was not made available on the conference call for comment. He is headed to California for the second opinion, the team said.
“As you can imagine, he was initially upset, but he has really turned himself from being upset to being focused on his rehabilitation,” Rizzo said. “He’s determined to get the surgery done and begin the process of rehabilitation.”

"An email was circulated with this information, but unfortunately the part about the telescope was dropped off and people only passed on the 'size of moon' part," said Geza Gyuk, astronomer at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago, Illinois.
If the red planet actually did appear as huge as purported in the Mars hoax email, life on Earth would likely be doomed.

The College rankings US News for the year 2011 have been released. Many Schools on the US News college rankings 2011 have awaited their standing, and the new rankings do have a few changes than the recent year. In fact, like any other poll, they are very subjective and careful in choosing what the best institutions are. And, like most polls, it is the same old favorites every year that are on top, even if they've changed positions. Nevertheless, the US News college rankings 2011 have Harvard and Williams College on top this time, even if opposition to the polls is growing.
In the poll for best national university, Harvard and Princeton have been neck-and-neck for the last decade. Last year, they actually finished in a tie, but that wouldn't be the case this year. The US News college rankings 2011 were the 10th straight edition to have Harvard and Princeton at 1-2, but Harvard took the lead this time.
Behind the Crimson and the Tigers, Yale took the third-place title, while Columbia moved up to fourth place. The highest non-Ivy League school was Stanford, in a tie for fifth with Penn.
On the US News college rankings 2011, Harvard got a perfect score, while Princeton settled for a 99. The criteria were tweaked a bit this year, adding high school counselor evaluations and putting more weight on graduation and retention rates.

Today Buffalo news reports death toll has risen in the City Grill shooting. The terror burst out with the Buffalo news reports shortly after 2:30 am local time Saturday at in City Grill, a downtown popular restaurant. By 11 am EST, the death toll is at 4.
BREAKING NEWS – Buffalo Police say within the last hour that the shooter(s) are still be sought for a early morning rampage. Without specifying if one or more shooters is at large, Buffalo police are still investigating the scene of Saturday’s predawn shooting in the 200 block of Main St. Police spokesman Mike De George says the death toll is at 4, comprised of two men and two women. De George says there are 4 additionally injured. He says their conditions are unknown but they are all males.
Three fatal victims were found dead on the sidewalk reports Buffalo news, a fourth pronounced dead at a local area hospital thereafter.
According to Police spokesman Mike De George number of shooters is unknown. “There was some type of incident [inside the restaurant...] and it then spilled outside and that’s when the shootings occurred.” De George says that I think that shooter was not alone on rampage and it seems that there was a gunfight between several parties. The Police is still searching for the shooters.

The Leader Board of PGA Championship 2010 should have been partly filled by now. At this time, the Leader Board of PGA Championship 2010 would have a few early frontrunners. But the leader board still has no names on it, as of 11:15 a.m. est. That is just because of the first tee off of the tournament took place five minutes earlier, instead of three hours earlier. Thanks to fog, the PGA Championship 2010 Leader Board is blank this morning, and won't get even partly filled until late this afternoon. The original plan was to have Jason Day, Scott Hebert, Tim Petrovic, Rich Steinmetz, Vaughn Taylor and Bo Van Pelt start the tournament at 8 a.m. est. However, fog made that quite impossible, as Whistling Straits started to look even more like a British Open course.

If not for the fog, the PGA Championship 2010 Leader Board would show at least a few names off to a good start. In fact, Tiger Woods was scheduled to tee off at 9:20 a.m., so he would have had a telling morning by now. Instead, Woods will tee off at 12:20 p.m. est, and most of his round will get to air on TNT this afternoon

Former Alaska Republican Sen. Ted Stevens and ex-NASA Administrator Sean O Keefe were dead with seven others people in a small aircraft that crashed Monday night in Southwest Alaska.

National Guard of Alaska was doing recovery operations. Basic reports said five of the nine aboard had died. The identities of the dead and survivors have not been released yet.

The rugged wilds of Alaska can be a very dangerous place to fly over in small planes, which many do. Iconic social commentator and comedian Will Rogers died in a plane crash there in 1935, as did Louisiana Democrat Thomas Hale Boggs Sr., then the House Majority Leader.

The plane carrying Boggs, the father of longtime broadcast commentator Cokie Roberts, disappeared there in 1972 enroute from Anchorage to Juneau to a campaign fundraiser and was never found.

Boggs was declared legally dead in 1973, along with a fellow passenger Rep. Nick Begich. If that last name sounds familiar, it should. That deceased congressman was the father of Mark Begich, a Democratic former Anchorage mayor who now holds Stevens' Senate seat.

The Birthday of US President Barack Hussain Obama amid a growing controversy from members of the so-called "Birther" movement who claim that today is not actually his birthday. "Mr. Obama wants us to believe that today is his birthday, but since he won't provide his birth certificate, we're not going to take his word for it," said Orly Taitz, a leading Birther.

Speaking at a press conference in Nairobi, Kenya, Ms. Taitz said that she had traveled "to the land of the President's birth" to find his original birth certificate, but to no avail.

"Unfortunately, the tribal shaman in the President's village didn't keep very good records," she said. "It's probably hidden away in a mud hut somewhere."

8 People Are Dead In Manchester Workplace Shooting

According to state police, at least eight people are dead in a workplace shooting in Manchester at Hartford Distributors, a family-owned beer and wine wholesaler.
The reliable sources said that Omar S. Thornton, 34, were a driver for the company and was described by a Teamsters Union official as a recent hire and a "disciplinary problem."

A Teamsters official John Hollis said, "The union was bringing him in to meet with the company to remedy the problem, he started shooting."
Thornton shot a number of people and then shot himself with a .223 caliber semiautomatic rifle as police approached and is dead, sources said. Two were shot outside the building and five were shot inside, police sources said.

John Hollis is not ready to describe the exact nature of the disciplinary problem, and he said he wasn't certain if the meeting had taken place when the shooting started.

2011 Ford Explorer: Redesigned SUV Disclose

Ford disclosed its modern and redesigned Explorer SUV this morning in New York’s Herald Square. The new arrival, which borrows design cues from Ford’s former Land Rover unit, represents the biggest change by far in Ford’s approach to its bread-and-butter family hauler and onetime sales superstar.

Company officials say the new Explorer reflects CEO Alan Mulally’s philosophy of developing a broader range of vehicles that can be tailored closely to what customers want. In some ways the Explorer also seeks to appeal to a wider audience than ever before.

The new vehicle casts an even wider net. It can still tow a 5,000-pound trailer, but its looks and mechanical underpinnings are more car-like — designed for a smooth, quiet ride. The standard engine is a 290 horsepower V6. but instead of an optional V8 with more power, Ford is offering the truck with a 237-horsepower four-cylinder EcoBoost engine that is supposed to give V6 performance with 30% better fuel economy. The real history-making announcement: The smaller engine will cost more than the larger, more powerful one. Ford has not revealed pricing for the vehicle or the optional engine.

2011 Ford Explorer To Be Built in Chicago

The 2011 Explorer will go into production late this year at Ford's Chicago assembly plant, on the same line as the Ford Taurus and Lincoln MKS sedans. The company is spending $400 million to retool for the Explorer.

The lighter construction method, along with EcoBoost engines, will enable the new Explorer to get at least 25 percent better fuel economy than the 2010 Explorer.

Mark Fields, Ford president of the Americas, said the new Explorer "will redefine the SUV for the modern era."

This time in 2010 Ironman Lake Placid professional race consists of a pair of former winners, along with a number of Ironman champions.

Joining the men's defending champion, Germany's Maik Twelsiek, will be multiple Ironman winners Australian Jason Shortis and New Zealand's Bryan Rhodes. The women's field will be led by Americans Caitlin Snow, the 2008 Ironman Lake Placid champion, and Amy Marsh.

Twelsiek won his first Ironman title in 2007 at Ironman Wisconsin and recently finished in third place at Ironman Lanzarote. He posted a 12th-place finish at the 2009 Ironman World Championship. Shortis is a veteran of the Ironman circuit with a resume that includes two titles at Ironman Western Australia. He raced to a third-place finish at Ironman Lake Placid in 2003 and repeated that performance at the 2009 race.

Rhodes is on the comeback trail after an Achilles injury last year; his last Ironman win was at the 2008 Ironman Canada. Others to watch in the field are Ben Hoffman, who placed third at the early-season Ironman St. George and perennial top-10 finisher Petr Vabrousek.

Snow followed her surprise win in Lake Placid in 2008 with a second-place finish last year. Known for her amazing strength on the marathon, Snow used that speed to move herself up to third place at Ironman St. George in May. Marsh took her first Ironman title at the 2009 Ironman Wisconsin; she added to that with a recent win at the 2010 Ironman China. Australia's Carrie Lester burst on to the Ironman scene with a win at Ironman Australia earlier this year in her first Ironman and first marathon.

Ironman Lake Placid will take place for the 12th consecutive year, and more than 2,600 athletes are expected to compete for a professional prize purse of $50,000 and 72 qualifying spots for the 2010 Ironman World Championship to be held in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii in October.

General Motors agreed to pay $3.5B for Fort Worth-based AmeriCredit

On July 22, 2010, Thursday said General Motors has agreed to pay $3.5 billion for the finance company to support and help sell cars to consumers with less-than-perfect credit. If deal completed, it would be yet another loss to Fort Worth’s stock of large publicly-traded companies. As GM said it doesn’t appear initially that much will change with AmeriCredit’s presence and the finance company’s management will stay in place.

AmeriCredit, which targets car buyers with credit scores below 650, will enter the auto leasing business after the transaction closes in the fourth quarter to expand beyond its traditional auto loan business.

Time-Warner Cable Service says Soldier Bill He's Getting a Refund, Then Threatens to ring His Credit

Bill the reader of Consumerist is in the U.S. Army and has been calling Fort Bragg, NC, his home when he wasn't in Iraq. Recently, he was given orders to relocate out west, which meant it was time to pack up the family and -- among other things -- transfer his cable service. Unfortunately, since Time-Warner Cable doesn't service his new location, he had to cancel. But what started out as a simple solution that would net him a $64 refund quickly degraded into cancellation fees and threats of inflicting pain on his credit score.

Here it is in Bill's own words:

In May, before we moved, I called Time-Warner to see if service was available where we were moving. When we determined it was not available, I canceled my cable service, which the operator was happy to do. I was not told of any penalties at that time. A few weeks later, I received a statement showing a credit for the portion of my May service not used -- approx. $64. My wife confirmed on the phone with an operator that we owed nothing and would soon receive our check.

A few weeks after moving, I received a new statement from Time- Warner stating that I now owed $14 after being charged a $78 cancellation fee. This fee had never been discussed in our previous phone calls with TWC customer support, and contravenes the Servicemember's Civil Relief Act because we moved on active duty orders.

When I called and explained this to the customer service rep, he offered to make the balance zero -- but if I wanted the $64 that TWC owed me, he would have to talk to higher management to get the fee waived. I told him I did want that money, and that it was not an option for the company. He said I would hear back in a few days.

On July 2, I received a call from a TWC collections representative, asking me to pay on the phone or face credit reporting. When I explained the situation, he was the first one to ask me to fax a copy (no email of course, because everyone uses faxes in 2010) of my orders, and he would clear it "today."

At that point, Bill thought he'd finally put the whole ordeal behind him. Until the other day when he received yet another invoice for $14.

He called customer service and was told that they had indeed received his fax, but had no explanation for why he was still being charged. Once again, he was promised that someone would discuss the matter with "management" and that he should check with them in a few days.

Let's hear from Bill one last time:

In many military posts, Soldiers' only option for internet and cable in their barracks is Time-Warner -- I wonder how many of them received such charges, didn't know their rights, and were intimidated into paying.

We'd definitely love to hear if any other members of our armed forces have had this or similar problems with Time-Warner.

Some new expected details of fatal shooting of Suwanee man in New Jersey to be released.

The authorities of New Jersey have interviewed an underground police detective who shot and killed a Suwanee banking executive, who was visiting Newark for his high school reunion, an event the 48-year-old father of four helped organize.

The spokesman for the Essex County prosecutor Katherine Carter told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Tuesday that authorities expect to release later in the day more information about what happened Friday evening in Branch Brook Park, an area authorities said was known as a meeting place for sexual activity.

Homicide investigators interviewed the detective Monday evening. Carter said she expected some of the information collected will be released.

DeFarra Gaymon, president and CEO of Credit Union Atlanta, was shot once in the chest around 6 p.m. Friday; he died three hours later at a Newark hospital.

Gaymon was unarmed but police have said but he "tussled" with the detective who was trying to arrest him.

No other details about the shooting have been released.

The legend Colt McCoy of Texas Longhorns finally got married with his girlfriend Rachel Glandorf this week, the most important thing was when Colt was upstaged by his former college emulative Tim Tebow and Tim was not even there.

During the celebrations, McCoy got a special country music serenade from former Texas teammate Jordan Shipley -- who now plays for the Cincinnati Bengals.

McCoy and his new bride Rachel Glandorf happily clapped along with their guests during the tribute -- but it wasn't until around 1:55 into the song that the crowd goes completely ballistic ... when Shipley found a way to work Tim Tebow into the lyrics.

The Twittersphere burst out Sunday when former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin tweeted that "peaceful Muslims" should "refudiate" the mosque being built in New York City near where the Twin Towers once stood. Palin found herself the critic of many tweets, as refudiate, in fact, is not a word in the English language.

After deleting the lawbreaking tweet, Palin replaced it with another calling on "peaceful New Yorkers" to "refute the Ground Zero mosque plan," which only added to the confusion because it would appear the word she was looking for was "repudiate." Then came the kicker: To quell the vicious Twitter-ribbing she was receiving, Palin unleashed yet another tweet comparing herself to no less than the Bard of Avon.

In fact, this led to a very funny Twitter meme, #ShakesPalin, in which participants revamped classic Shakespeare quotes, Palin-style (and of which Reason's Julian Sanchez was arguably the champion).

According to publicist of Zsa Zsa Gabor, Zsa Zsa Gabor was rushed to a Los Angeles hospital on Saturday evening after falling from her bed and breaking several of her bones.

Zsa Zsa Gabor the 93-year-old star was watching "Jeopardy" when she try to answer the phone and fell out of her bed, according to her husband,Prince Von Anhalt, who says he heard her scream and called an ambulance.

Doctors could operate on the 93-year-old actress later in the day, said Gabor's husband, Prince Frederic von Anhalt.

"She's in the emergency room. She has a broken hip, and they have to operate on her," he said. "It's a complicated thing. It was an accident. And she is not that young anymore."

The glamorous Hungarian-born actress, the middle of the celebrated Gabor sisters, is most famous for her eight marriages. Among her husbands were hotel millionaire Conrad Hilton and Oscar-winning actor George Sanders.

Her more prominent films include John Huston's 1952 Toulouse-Lautrec biopic, "Moulin Rouge"; "The Story of Three Loves," 1953; "The Girl in the Kremlin," 1957; and Orson Welles' classic "Touch of Evil," 1958.

In 1989, Gabor was sentenced to 72 hours in jail for slapping a Beverly Hills police officer after a traffic stop. She also had to perform community service at a battered women's shelter.

The other Gabor sisters were Magda, the oldest, who died in 1997 five days shy of 83, and Eva, the youngest, who died in 1995 at 76.

Magda, an occasional stage actress, also was married to George Sanders at one time.

Eva is probably best remembered for her role as a socialite turned farmer's wife on the 1960s' TV sitcom "Green Acres."

Apple scheduled a press conference this Friday as many technology critics foresee, either to talk about the latest iPhone 4 as it could foreshadow a possible recall, a free in-store modification of their hardware, and a handout of free bumpers.

A series of reports from prominent analyst claimed on Thursday that they think Applewill initiate a recall of their iPhone 4 in the iPhone 4 press conference, scheduled for 10:00 am PT on Friday at the Cupertino, California.

Now a lot of speculations are giving concrete evidence that the said press conferencewill tacle the Apple’s recall of their recently launched handset, while others still believe that a full recall is a very long shot.

Sheppard was also the PA announcer for the New York Giants from 1956-2006.

The fact that three first-year shows earned outstanding-series nominations would normally be surprising, but it merely confirmed the received wisdom among the broadcast networks that 2009-10 was an extraordinary season, and “Glee” and “Modern Family” (comedy) and “The Good Wife” (drama) were all expected to be in the field. “The Good Wife” even deserved to be. I’m not a huge fan of the two comedies, but it’s hard to argue with much passion for any of the shows left out in that category. There are no tears here that “Family Guy” didn’t repeat, or that the critical love shown to “Parks and Recreation” in its second season didn’t result in a nomination (though Amy Poehler did receive one for best lead actress in a comedy). It would have been nice to see “Party Down.” Of course, the best comedy on any American channel this past season was the final series of “Gavin and Stacey” on BBC America, but dream on.

"Not the kind of life to be commenting about in a brief tweet. It's something I deeply regret," she wrote. Still, she praised Fadlallah for being a pioneer on "woman's rights," and warning Muslim men against abusing their wives.

It was not enough. On Wednesday, CNN fired her.

Parisa Khosravi, senior vice president of CNN International Newsgathering, told the staff that Nasr accepts she shouldn't have made such a "simplistic" comment without context.

"However," Khorsravi wrote in a memo, "at this point, we believe that her credibility in her position as senior editor for Middle Eastern affairs has been compromised going forward."

Fardia Kahlo was the victim of polio when she was a child, but overcame it, eventually learning to dance and play sports.
As a young woman, she was in a terrible trolley accident. Her spinal column was broken, her left leg smashed, and her right foot crushed. An iron handrail pierced her pelvis, perhaps leading to her inability later in life to carry a child.
After the accident, Kahlo was bedridden for months and, according to her website, began to paint the plaster corsets which held her in place. A special easel was created so she could paint lying down, and her mother placed a mirror on the ceiling over her bed.
The researchers also noted how "many of her best-known works depict her physical suffering: her bleeding, broken and weeping body. Her paintings and drawings are like medical case reports."
In 1953, her leg was amputated, a result of gangrene that the researchers believe she contracted during an unnecessary surgery.
Kahlo died on July 13, 1954. The official cause of death was pulmonary embolism set on by pneumonia, but some have speculated that she overdosed on pain killers.
Despite her physical ailments, a life of chronic pain, and scores of surgeries to put her back together again, Kahlo's talents as a painter were irrepressible.
